When your friends come around and you want to give them a good laugh, your first thought might not be an illustrated book. However, the “All My Friends are Dead” book is so much more than a book of illustrations.
All my Friends are dead is a dark comedy illustration by Avery Monsen and Jory John. This quick and funny book will guarantee a few LOLs here and there. It’s dark and unusual humor has made it a favorite among different age groups. In the words of a reviewer, this book is “the saddest funny book and the funniest sad book” you’ll ever find. The layering of two almost opposite emotions in one book is something only true artists can pull off.
All My Friends Are Dead: The Synopsis
The book starts out with the dinosaur on the cover telling us that he has lost all his friends. At first you want to feel sorry for him because he’s all alone, but the writers introduce a new character – the last Dodo bird. Now you’re feeling sorry for him too. The dinosaur and the Dodo bird have one thing in common. Yeah you guessed right – the Dodo bird has lost all his friends too. Other characters like Jerome the old man, the clown, a plant, a gallon of milk, a snowman are introduced and yeah, they have lost all their friends too. Well in the case of the gallon of milk, his friends expired and the tree’s friends have become end tables. Once you clock that all the characters created by Monsen and Jory are the last of their kind, then you begin to really enjoy the sarcasms staring right at you.
Although this book is about death and losing friends, ultimately this book will make you laugh. From the sock whose friends have all gone missing to the chicken whose friends are now Kentucky Fried Chicken, the vivid stories painted by this book are enough to make you cry and laugh at the same time.
Going for under $10, I’d say this work of art is a steal. So if you’re ready to get your dark humor on, you can order your own copy here.
